Abstract

Abstract Title

The extent of violence in Morocco, its origins, causes and means of prevention

Research tools that measure child maltreatment are essential for preventing child abuse and neglect worldwide. They enable the development of policies and programs aimed at strengthening child protection and adapting educational programs for general and continuing education.
A major obstacle to research on a global scale has been the lack of appropriate tools for conducting local surveys with children and young people. The aim is to overcome this obstacle by developing common tools that will enable systematic comparisons of data across different cultures, time periods, and even between research groups working in the same country or using the same language.
In collaboration with the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN), UNICEF, the UN Secretary-General’s Study on Violence against Children, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the World Health Organization (WHO), a questionnaire (ICAST) was developed. Its tools were designed by international experts, reviewed by over 100 specialists from different countries, and field-tested in eight countries. Since then, these tools have been translated and tested in over 20 languages.
The application of the ICAST study in Morocco is of great importance because of the precision, reliability and effectiveness of these tools, which have been tried and tested in many countries. This study looks at the prevalence of violence and child abuse in Morocco, both in schools and within families, examining the various forms and manifestations of child abuse.
The ecological approach is also discussed, explaining that violence against children cannot be reduced to a single factor, but results from multiple causes at different levels, involving both the aggressor and the victim, the family or school context, the local community and society as a whole.
Finally, the text discusses ways of preventing violence against children, so that interventions are clear and effective in reducing or preventing violence.
